Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. J. T. SCOTT was born in Harrison County December 25, 1844, and is now passing into his fifty-seventh year. His father, J. S. Scott, deceased, was of Virginia stock, although born in Delaware. He removed to Kentucky, with his parents, when only 8 years old. J. S. Scott married Miss Sarah Burgess in 1844 and to this union nine children were born, of which Dr. J. T. Scott is the eldest. They were all raised in Harrison County, on the old home place, where Mrs. Scott, now quite old, still resides. The children are now scattered and find homes in many states. W. W. Scott lives at Baxter Springs, Kansas, John Scott in Columbus, Georgia, and they are dealers and traders in fine horses. Mrs. T. H. Hayes, one of the sisters, lives in Cincinnati; the remainder of the children, Henry Scott, Mrs. James Caldwell and Mrs. Samuel Smith, live in Harrison County. Dr. Scott grew up to manhood on his father's farm. His opportunity for an education was not good, but by dint of hard work, perseverance and many sacrifices he obtained a sufficient education to secure a teacher's certificate, and, like many another worthy son, began life for himself as a schoolteacher. He taught several terms during the winter months, worked on the farm during the cropping seasons, but all of the time had his mind and heart on the study of the medical profession, and at odd times and moments read with a persistence that finally landed him at the goal of his ambition. He attended the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery and graduated from that institution in March 1869. In May of that year, with his diploma and his wife as his only capital, he adopted Grant County as his home, and began the practice of his profession at Downingsville. He remained there one year and moved to Jonesville; practiced there for five years and then located at Knoxville. Here he first became a dealer in leaf tobacco as rehandler and shipper. All the time he continued active in the practice of his profession. In 1888, having acquired a competency in life, he moved to Williamstown and has since resided at his beautiful home on North Main Street. Since moving to Williamstown the doctor has ceased to practice medicine, but continues to purchase and rehandle tobacco. He buys every year from one-fourth to one-half a million pounds. He has been very successful. In July, 1868, Dr. Scott united in marriage with Miss Sallie Hedger, of Scott County, a relative of the Hedgers of Grant. To this marriage three children were born, only two of whom are now living--Mr. Dr. G. W. Tucker, of Dana, Indiana and Mrs. J. C. Brown of Williamstown. Mr. J. C. Brown is associated with the doctor in the tobacco trade. In politics Dr. Scott is a Democrat of the persistent type. In 1896 he was a delegate to Chicago to the great Democratic convention that nominated William J. Bryan for President, and has always been a hard party worker. He is a member of the Baptist Church and active and liberal toward all things that tend to better the condition of the people. He is now President of the Williamstown and Owenton Telephone Company and active in its management.
