Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, Kniffin 1st ed., 1885 Reprinted 1972 by Kentucky Reprint Co., Murray, KY. Graves Co. AMOS WEST was born September 27, 1837, in Logan County, Ky. He is a son of Richard and Amy (Williamson) West. The father was born in Logan County, and died March 4, 1841, at the age of thirty-five. The mother was born in Virginia, and died in June, 1880, aged sixty-seven. Amos West came to Graves County with his mother in 1846, and assisted on her farm and attended the neighboring schools. After attending the Linden Seminary, Tennessee, he returned to Graves County, where he taught school for three years. At the breaking out of the war, he entered the Confederate Army, and in February, 1862, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant, which position he held until the close of the war, when he returned to Mayfield and secured a position as clerk with Smith & McElrath. He remained with the firm for two years, then with Mr. Hobson opened a grocery store, at the same time handling leaf tobacco. After continuing in the business for three years he sold out his interest in the grocery business. He was appointed by Judge Crossland circuit court commissioner, and held the position for two years. Mr. West was married on December 20, 1870, to Olivia Collins of Mayfield by whom he has two children - one son and one daughter. Mr. West is a member of the Masonic fraternity.
