KENTUCKY: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Green Co. BENJAMIN W. BAILEY was born October 23, 1842, and is the third of five sons and four daughters, all of whom lived to be grown except one girl, born to Grief and Martha P. (Durham) Bailey, natives of Taylor County, Ky. Grief Bailey was a farmer and a slave holder, and died in October, 1874. He was a son of Robert Bailey, who was born in Virginia, and when a child was brought to Kentucky by his parents. Mrs. Martha P. Bailey was a daughter of James & Patsey (Compton) Durham, who came from Virginia in the early settling of Kentucky, where James Durham was a justice for many years. Benjamin W. Bailey was born in Taylor County, and grew to manhood on a farm, receiving a liberal education. In October, 1869, he was united in marriage to Ellen N. Edwards, a daughter of Chapman and Jane (Mitchell) Edwards, who were born in Green County. Mr. Edwards was a farmer and trader, was a quartermaster in the Thirteenth Kentucky Volunteers, and died while in the service. He had served as sheriff of Green County several terms; was a son of Thomas Edwards, who married Agnes Hobson, both of whom came from Virginia in an early day. Thomas Edwards was a farmer and owner of slave property, also a miller by trade. Mr. and Mrs. Bailey had born to them five children - four living: Clarence, Willie Wood, Jennie P. and Baswell E. Mr. and Mrs. Bailey are members of the Baptist Church. After marriage Mr. Bailey located on a farm adjoining the place where he now resides, four miles north of Greensburg. His present farm contains 348 acres, on which he located in 1876, nearly all of which is cleared and in excellent state of cultivation, well improved with good substantial buildings, all of which he has accumulated by his own industry. He turns his attention to especially to cattle raising, and was a member of the Grange while in existence. In politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for J.C. Breckinridge.
