CHEWNING was born January 29, 1844, and is the elder of the two sons of William T. and Barrilla (Ball) Chewning. William Chewning was born in 1799 in Rockbridge County, Va., and 1807 settled near Greensburg, Ky. He was a boatman and horse trader in early days, later became a farmer, and died in 1881 in Taylor County. His father, Killis Chewning, of Virginia, was a soldier in the war for independence and came to Green County in 1807, and engaged in farming. Mrs. Barrilla Chewning was born in Green County, and was a daughter of Col. Robert and Anna (Webb) Ball. Col. Ball was one of the very early settlers of Green County; was one of the patriots of 1812; was a colonel at New Orleans; became one of the leading farmers of Green County, and owned abut thirty slaves. He was born in 1776 and died in 1866. Benjamin F. Chewning was born in Taylor County; but reared on a farm and attended school until sixteen, when, in the fall of 1861, he enlisted in Company G, Thirteenth Kentucky Volunteers, and was in all general engagements with his regiment from the time it left home till [sic] its return. He was at Huff's Ferry, Knoxville, Perryville, several Georgia campaigns; was made an orderly during the siege of Atlanta, and was discharged with the regiment at Louisville. After his return he resumed farm life, and in January, 1865, was united in marriage to Sarah Ann, a daughter of Simeon L. and Martha (Mitchell) Cowherd, who were natives of Taylor and Green Counties respectively. Mr. Cowherd, a blacksmith, was a son of Simeon and Sally (Richardson) Cowherd, early pioneers of Green County. To this happy union four children were born: William S., Robert H., Anna M. and Alex. S. After his marriage Mr. Chewning located where he now resides, ten miles east of Greensburg, on 160 acres; he now owns 300 acres, 200 acres of which are cleared and in a good state of cultivation, with a fine orchard. He served as marshal in taking the census in 1870, and he also served as justice four years. He is a member of the F. & A. M. In politics is a Republican, and cast his first presidential vote for U.S. Grant. He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church.
