"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 371-372. Used by permission. [Hardin] CHARLES WILLIAM BOWLES: Charles William Bowles was born at Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky, on August 20, 1867, and is the son of P. M. and Delilah Bowles. He attended the schools in Glasgow and also old Liberty College, then a thriving college in Glasgow. For several years before he entered the ministry he was a farmer and a carpenter and for some time taught vocal music. At the age of twenty, in 1887, he was converted and baptized into the fellowship of Pleasant Hill Church, Hart County, Kentucky, by Elder J. A. Veach. This same church licensed and ordained him to preach in 1906, with Elder J. A. Veach, W. T. Parrish, and Robert Cave serving as presbytery. He immediately entered the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville and remained three years. His pastorates have all been in Kentucky. They are: Cave Hill, Upton, Lucas Grove, Otter Creek, Buck Grove, Stithton, Hiseville, Sonora, where he spent twelve years, Vine Grove, Whitesville, and back again to Buck Grove. New buildings were erected at Clarkson, Millerstown, and Cave Hill, during his pastorates. New additions of Sunday School rooms were completed at Sonora and Whitesville also. He also served as Moderator of Associations, a member of the State Mission Board, and a member of the Ministers' Aid Society of Kentucky. In grateful recognition for his past services the Church at Sonora has elected him Pastor Emeritus and pays him a small stipend. He makes his home there after serving about 46 years in the ministry. In that time he informs us that he attended the sessions of the Southern Baptist Convention 34 times. He has baptized 4,500 people and has had over 6,000 conversions. This gives evidence of a good evangelistic ministry. While a member of the Daviess-McLean Association Bro. Bowles preached the Annual Sermon in 1930. He married Miss Josie Mabe. Three daughters and one son were born to the union. His wife and children are still living. He is a good minister of Jesus Christ.
