ELKIN, one of the ablest physicians of Pleasureville, Henry Co., Ky., was born in Clark County, April 16, 1830, a son of Enoch and Annie (Quisenberry) Elkin. His maternal grandfather was one of the first Baptist preachers in Kentucky, as was also his paternal grandfather, Ezekiel Elkin, who was born in Virginia. His father was born in Clark County, and followed farming all his life. Our subject was educated at the Kentucky Military Institute and at Centre College, Danville. He began the study of medicine under Dr. Taylor, of Lexington, and attended three terms at the Lexington Medical College. In 1851 he joined a club of engineers, and surveyed the southern Pacific route from Marshall, Tex., to El Paso, Tex. He then made a survey of the Pacific coast from Alaska to South America. Returning home he was united in marriage, January 25, 1859, with Miss Lucy Ireland, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Moore) Ireland of Henry County. In 1861 Dr. Elkin entered the Confederate Army under Gen. Morgan, whom he accompanied on his raid through Ohio and Indiana; was taken prisoner in 1864 at Madison, Ind., where he remained twenty-three months. He then came to Pewee Valley, Ky., where for a year he acted as depot agent. He then taught school one year at Dallasburg; moved thence to Liberty Station on the Short Line Railroad, and was appointed surgeon on that line, acting as such until 1885. In the latter year he moved to Pleasureville, where he has since practiced his profession. Dr. and Mrs. Elkin have four children: Ella (wife of Dr. Tandy, of Kansas), Charles, Bessie and Willie.
