Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. JOHN W. MATHEWS was born November 20, 1843, in New Castle, Henry Co., Ky., a son of C. M. Mathews, one of the oldest and leading men of the county, and of a Virginia family. C. M. came to Kentucky when he was a small boy, and has lived principally in Woodford and Henry Counties since. John W. Mathews is the third in a family of eight children, and was educated at New Castle. He began life as a farmer, working at agricultural pursuits for about one year. During the civil war he served two years as clerk in the quartermaster's department of the Federal Army, and after leaving the service was clerk at the Capitol Hotel at Frankfort. He then engaged in merchandising two years; later was superintendent of navigation on the Kentucky River, and, as engineer, assisted in locating Locks 6 and 7. In 1871, he entered the bank of New Castle, organized it as a national bank in 1874, and has been its cashier ever since, during which time its stock has increased in value from ninety-five to one hundred and seventy-five per cent, and returns annually to its stockholders fourteen per cent dividends. Mr. Mathews has been trustee of the jury fund for fifteen years, and has also held other offices of trust in town and municipal affairs. In 1876 he married Miss Yeba, daughter of Judge John M. Hewitt, who was one of the leading men of public life in Kentucky. Mrs. Mathews' brother, John Hewitt, is at present speaker of the House of Representatives of Arkansas. The Hewitts are natives of Virginia, and descendants of Chief Justice Marshall. Twelve children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Mathews: Mattie (Weems); C. M., now in the employ of the Standard Oil Company; Pryor, John H., Joseph M., George, Yeba, Lawrence, Ruth, Marguerite, Albert and St. John. Mr. Mathews is a deacon of the Christian Church.
