Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 8th ed., 1888, Jefferson Co. WILLIAM B. DOHERTY, M.D., is a native of Ireland, and was born in Donegal County, January 24, 1847. His parents died in Ireland, but he was liberally educated. After going through the National schools and teaching for a time, he took a classical course. He came to New York in July, 1867, and for a time taught school. In the meantime he began the study of medicine. He came to Kentucky in 1869, and graduated from the medical department of the University of Louisville in 1872, and has practiced ever since. For six years he was clinical assistant to Profs. Parvin and Holland, both now of Philadelphia. He served for two years on the Louisville Hospital staff. In 1886 he visited Europe, where he attended the hospitals of Dublin, London, Berlin and Vienna. He was married in April, 1875, to Miss Tillie R. Deppen, a daughter of J. L. Deppen, a well known citizen of Louisville. He is secretary of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, one of the oldest medical societies in the United States, having been established in 1832, and chartered by the Legislature of Kentucky in 1838. Prof. Gross was the first president, and Austin Flint and Lewis Rogers among the incorporators. He is Medical Examiner for the Catholic Knights of America, and other insurance companies, and is visiting physician to Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospitals.
