Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. AMBROSE D. COLLINS was born near where he now resides, June 14, 1823, and was the eldest son of Lewis and Sallie (Cleveland) Collins, who were born respectively in Virginia and Jessamine County, Ky. Lewis Collins was a farmer, born in 1780, and died in 1852. On coming to the State he engaged in farming, and subsequently engaged with John Cleveland in the gunpowder business, which they carried on successfully for several years. Mr. A. D. Collins has spent his life on the farm, receiving a good practical education. He has been twice married, first on October 5, 1848, to Francis A. Sandusky, a granddaughter of Ephraim Sandusky, who was a son of one of the old surveyors and pioneers, and was almost as noted in the history of Kentucky as Daniel Boone; her death occurred in July, 1851. His second marriage was October 8, 1857, to Sallie W. Burgess of Harrison County, Ky. To this union are living eight children: Bettie J., John B., George L., Ella, Fannie, James B., Hettie and Ambrose D. Mr. Collins was lieutenant of one division of the old State militia from about 1840 to 1845. Mr. Collins is pleasantly located on a farm of about 500 acres, and has reared an intelligent family. From 1874 to 1880 he was president of the Versailles and Nicholasville Turnpike; is one of the directors of the First National Bank of Nicholasville, and owns ten shares of stock in said bank. He owns sixteen shares of the turnpike at present, and is treasurer of the road. Mr. Collins is a member of the Particular Baptist Church.
