Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. NATHAN D. MILES was born in Sullivan County, Ind., on the 2d of April 1841, and is the third son of Nathan and Jane (Roberts) Miles, who were natives of Washington County, Ky., near Richmond, Va., respectively. On the paternal side he is of Scotch origin, and Irish descent on the maternal side. He was born on the farm, and worked there until about sixteen, when his father sent him to an academy supported by the Methodists at New Lebanon, Ind., where he was prepared for entering college, and had made sufficient progress in 1864 to become a member of the sophomore class, in Asbury College at Greencastle, Ind.; remained there till [sic] the following year, completing his studies in the sophomore class, and in 1865 entered the junior class, State University, Bloomington, Ind.; graduated from the law department of the same school. In the same year he began the practice of law at Sullivan, Ind.; in 1868 was elected and represented Sullivan County in the Lower House of the Legislature, being re-elected in 1870 to fill the same position. In March, 1871, he married Mrs. Kittie (Hemphill) Roberts, daughter of Andrew Hemphill, of Jessamine County. To them have been born three children: Daniel Voorhees, Katie Tilden and Arthur Hemphill. In 1871 he removed from Sullivan County to Kentucky, located at Sulphur Well; in 1875 came to his farm, one mile southeast of Nicholasville. In 1873 Mr. Miles represented his adopted county in the Kentucky Legislature, where the majority were against his party, Democrat. He owns a well improved farm of 490 acres; is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and well respected by those who know him.
