Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. PETER SIMPSON was born in Ireland, and married Martha Moore near Philadelphia, Penn. About 1801 he came to Jessamine County, Ky., and settled on Hickman Creek, five miles east of Nicholasville, the present residence of James M. Gregg. He was the father of eight children: Samuel, John, William, James, Robert, Patsey, Betsey and Margaret. Samuel Simpson, the eldest son, married Fannie Bourne, and died December 24, 1875, leaving two children: Martha and Robert. John Simpson, the second son, married Ailey Embry, and had five children born to him: Richard, William, Edwin, Martha (Mrs. Thomas K. Salter) and Elizabeth (Mrs. William Hood). William Simpson, Peter's third son, was born in Virginia in 1795, and in 1827 married Miss Letitia Young, daughter of Marion and Lydia (Glover) Young, who bore him the following children: Elizabeth (Mrs. James E. Beasley), Henrietta (Mrs. William McDowell), Martha (Mrs. Alexander Lusk), Mary (deceased), William, James, Minor, and infant not named and John (the last three are dead). The fourth son of Peter Simpson, James, was never married. Robert, the fifth son of Peter Simpson, married Miss Sedonia Young, and had born to him seven children, as follows: Minor, John, Matthew, Robert, Mary (Mrs. T. E. Walker), Lydia and Florence. Patsey, the sixth child and oldest daughter of Peter Simpson, married Lindsey Mays of Missouri, and had seven children: John, Simpson, Latham, Margaret, Sarah, Mary (Mrs. Latham) and Martha (Mrs. Hunter), Betsey Simpson, Peter's seventh child, married James Bibb and became the mother of six children: Benjamin, Robert, Richard, Rowland, Catherine (Mrs. A. B. Robinson) and Margaret. The youngest child and third daughter of Peter Simpson, Margaret, was married to Rowland Flournoy. William Simpson, son of William and Letitia (Young) Simpson, was born March 19, 1837, in Jessamine County, and is the only male representative of his family living in the county; he was educated at Bethel Academy in Nicholasville, remaining in the household until 1862, then located six miles east of Nicholasville, where he remained until 1871 and then purchased his present place of residence, comprising 650 acres on the Harrodsburg and Lexington Pike, and engaged in general farming. December 12, 1861, he married Miss Amanda H., daughter of George and Parthenia (Walker) Cleveland; to this union have been born nine children, viz.: William (deceased), George, James, William (deceased), John, Weldon, Cleveland, Paul and Robert. The family are members of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
