Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. JOHN E. SOPER was born August 17, 1842, and is a son of James and Elizabeth (Bibb) Soper. The father was a native of Maryland and died in 1862; his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Elgha and Agnes (Baker) Bibb, died in 1874. John Soper, grandfather of John E., married a Miss Higgins, and came to Kentucky in 1798. He first settled in Bourbon County, but in 1800 removed to Jessamine County, where he ended his days. He was the father of nine children named John H., James, Robert, Benjamin, Rebecca (Mrs. Benjamin Ricketts), Nellie (Mrs. Joseph Chrismen), Pattie (German Baxter), Lourena (Mrs. Laurence Soper) and Millie (Mrs. Richard Chandler). The children born to James and Elizabeth (Bibb) Soper were named Nancy (Mrs. Jefferson Allen), William B., James R., Benjamin F., David M., John E., Ore T. and Amos B. John E. Soper, a native of Jessamine County, was educated in the common schools, and in 1867 engaged in the lumber business on the Kentucky River, which he continued sixteen years, and then purchased 225 acres of land on the Lexington and Tate's Creek Pike, where he has ever since been engaged in farming. In 1869 he married Miss Emily G., daughter of John and Louisiana (Cravens) Baxter, and to this union have been born four children: Emma, Claude, Edwin and Viola. Mr. and Mrs. Soper are members of the Bethany Christian Church.
