Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. ELIJAH RICHARDSON WILSON, M. D., was born near Lexington, Fayette Co., Ky., December 2, 1819. His grandfather was Samuel Wilson, who came to Kentucky with Daniel Boone and the early settlers of the State, and located in Fayette County. He married and had a family of children, of whom John H., Samuel, William, Elijah and Robert Wilson were the sons. John H. Wilson was the father of Dr. Wilson. He engaged in trade for a time at Lexington, and finally went to farming, during which time he also taught school to some extent. He married Catherine McClanahan, and had six children: Elijah R., Samuel S., who died near Lexington; John H., who resided in that city; William, who died while a resident of Lexington; Catherine, who married John P. Berry, of Fayette County, and Robert, who resided in Lexington. Elijah R. Wilson enjoyed the benefits of a good common-school education, and when a young man began the study of medicine under Dr. John R. Smith, of Lexington. He subsequently attended lectures at Transylvania University, the medical department being then under the presidency of Dr. Benjamin W. Dudley, and was graduated from that institution with the degree of doctor of medicine, March 1, 1849. Immediately thereafter he located in practice at Pleasureville in Henry County, Ky., where he enjoyed an extensive and remunerative practice for twenty-two years. Owing to failing health he was finally compelled to withdraw, and removing to Jessamine County, purchased the residence and part of the farm of the late William Bryan, near Windom in that county, where he has continued to pursue the life of a farmer since. Dr. Wilson has let a singularly industrious and quiet life and held himself aloof from politics and public place. The family to which he belongs is one of the old families of the South and originally settled in North Carolina. From his boyhood he has been a devout and consistent member of the Christian Church, and he has uniformly enjoyed the confidence and respect of this acquaintance. He married, March 4, 1885, Mrs. Sarah Woodfill, daughter of Wesley and Cassandra Gardner, who is his wife at the present writing.
