A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky 1812-1913, compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p. 93. JOHN BENNETT, the next Master of Richmond Lodge, was born in Madison County March 22, 1837, and died May 1, 1903. He was the son of Samuel Bennett and Elizabeth Chenault, both of whom were of the best pioneer and Revolutionary stock. The subject of this sketch completed his education at Transylvania University just before the war between the States. He immediately began the study of law. On being admitted to the bar of his native County he entered at once upon a most successful professional and business career. A man of the strictest integrity and of a most companionable disposition, he counted his friends by his acquaintances. In addition to practicing his profession he was for many years president of the Farmers National Bank and was connected with other financial institutions of his County and State. He was elected to the State Senate in 1881, serving four years, and again in 1895. During the last term he became a candidate before his party caucus for United States Senator, but was defeated by William J. Deboe. He was made a Master Mason August 14, 1880. Elected Master of his Lodge December 27, 1888. Exalted a Royal Arch Mason in 1880. Created and constituted a Knights Templar December, 1880. Elected Eminent Commander April, 1884. Gifted with a rare sense of humor as well as a fine information, he was a most delightful companion. None but those to whom they were dispensed knew of the many charities performed by John Bennett. It can be truly said that he loved his fellowman. Bennett Chenault Deboe = none http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/madison/bennett.j2.txt
