Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Marion County. IDA EDWARDS, the subject of this sketch, is a daughter of Henry D. and Sallie C. (Payne) Edwards, parents of two daughters. Henry D. Edwards was born in Virginia, was brought to Marion County when a child and received his education at St. Mary's College. By self application and industry he became one of the finest scholars in his part of the county, and followed teaching for fifteen or twenty years. He was married December, 1849, after which he located on the banks of Rolling Fork, three and one-half miles west of Raywick, on a farm of 600 acres, one-half of which is under cultivation and improved with a large frame residence. He also owned many slaves and about 1,000 acres in LaRue County, which he disposed of before his death, as well as other property. He lost his parents when a child, after which he labored hard at the carpenter's trade, having been reared by a Mr. McElroy, and began his life penniless. He died December 4, 1883, aged ninety years. He was a son of Thomas Edwards, who married Elizabeth Dent, both natives of Virginia, and among the first settlers of Marion County. Thomas Edwards was a carpenter by trade and of English descent. Sallie C. (Payne) Edwards was born in Marion County, near Raywick, February 20, 1821. She was a daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Carter) Payne, natives of Virginia, and among the first settlers of Marion County. Mr. Payne, of English origin, was a large farmer and slave holder, and followed carpentering. He died July 2, 1837 at the age of fifty years.
