Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Marion County. JOHN B. EVANS, M.D., was born September 18, 1836. His father, Dr. Isaac G. Evans, was a native of Nelson County, was educated in Virginia, and afterward taught school and studied medicine, and for many years practiced in connection with agricultural pursuits in Nelson County. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was one of the most efficient Sunday school workers in that portion of the State. He married Miss Sallie, a daughter of John Bartley of Mercer County, Ky. They were the parents of five sons and five daughters, eight of whom are now living, Dr. John B. being the eldest; after him Samuel P., James E., Rhoda, Elijah, Augusta, Mary B. and William. Dr. I. G. Evans was born March 9, 1806, and died January 28, 1875. His father, Edward Evans was of English parentage and a native of Virginia. He came to Kentucky among the early settlers of Nelson County, and located near Bardstown, where he died in 1840, aged upward of ninety years. Dr. John B. Evans, a native of Nelson County, finished his literary course of school training in the Bardstown High School, and soon after began to read medicine with Dr. William Hickman of Bardstown, and graduated from the Medical University of Louisville in 1860, after which he was for one year an assistant in the State Dispensary at Louisville. He then located in Marion, where he practiced his profession one year, and in 1862 joined the Confederate States Army as a private soldier in Capt. Logan's company of Col. Grigsby's command, which was attached to the First Confederate State Cavalry under Gen. Wheeler. He was soon after commissioned surgeon of the command with the rank of major, and in that capacity served until his capture at Bridgeport, Ala., during Wheeler's raid into Tennessee. He accompanied Joe E. Johnston through Georgia to Atlanta, then was with Gen. Wheeler's command again until after the battles of Savannah and Smithville, after which he was attached to the escort of President Davis and cabinet until the fall of the Confederacy and the capture of its President. James Evans, a brother of Dr. John B. served through the war in the command of Gen. John A. Morgan. After the war the Doctor returned to his home in Marion County, where he has for more than a quarter of a century followed successfully the practice of his profession, in connection with the superintendency of the working of a farm that he owns. He was married, October 24, 1867, to Mary E., daughter of Moses and Susan (Simpson) Beard. To this union have been born two sons, William and Samuel; and five daughters, Susan, Sallie, Lizzie, Cordelia and Rhoda. Mrs. Mary E. (Beard) Evans was born October 17, 1846. Her parents were of Irish lineage and natives of Kentucky. The Doctor and his wife are members of the Methodist Church, in which he holds the office of steward and superintendent of Sunday school. He is a Royal Arch Mason of J. L. Rawlings Chapter, No. 122, and his political views are Democratic. He is a patron of church and school, especially of the Sunday school, in which he is a most willing and untiring worker.
