CHUMLEY was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., October 10, 1814, and was a son of John Chumley, a native of Virginia, who had three children, William, Colman and subject, who was the eldest. The family came originally from England. Mr. Chumley, the subject of this sketch, came to Kentucky when thirty-five years old, and settled in Mercer County. He married Miss Elizabeth Montgomery, a daughter of William Montgomery, by whom he had nine children, all living, but one, as follows: William T., Mary A., Nancy P., Charlotte, Robert, John, James and Lucy. His wife died and he again married, this time to Martha Adams, by whom he had five children, viz: Frank L., George C., Benjamin, Edward and Cordelia.
