COE was born April 15, 1846, in the southeast corner of Monroe County, Ky., where he grew to manhood and has always resided. He is the son of Squire Jesse Coe, a native of Clay County, Tenn., born June 5, 1811, and in infancy removed with his parents to Cumberland County, Ky., and in 1840 to Monroe County, his present home, where he has served twenty years as magistrate. He father, John Coe, removed from Surrey County, N. C., to Jackson County, Tenn., in 1809, and died in Cumberland County, Ky., in 1854, at the age of seventy years. He acted as magistrate thirty-five years, and high sheriff four years. He was the son of Isaiah Coe, of North Carolina, who died in 1834, at the age of seventy-four years. Jesse Coe married Caroline, daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Moore) Murley, of Cumberland County (born April 1, 1809), and their children are Elizabeth A. (Garner), Isaiah, Milton, John J., Margaret (Short), Nancy (McCoy), Benjamin F. and Jesse T. Benjamin F. obtained a common school education at the schools of the vicinity in which he was reared. Agusut 8, 1873, he married Martha M., daughter of Sperry and Nancy (Moore) Smith, of Metcalfe County, born July 29, 1851, and their union has been favored by the birth of Sidney M., Samuel (deceased), Hattie B., Jennie G., John E. H. and Charlie. Mr. Coe served in the capacity of constable for five years, and is the owner of 100 acres of well improved and productive land in good condition and fine state of cultivation.
