JAMES HARLAN was born August 5, 1826, six miles southeast of Tompkinsville, in Monroe County, Ky., where he was reared, and in 1871 located on Big Sulphur Creek, where he has since resided. His father, George Harlan, was also a native of Monroe County, where he died in 1855. He was the son of Samuel Harlan, of South Carolina. George Harlan, married Ruthy, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Belew) Springer, of Monroe County (living, aged seventy-four years), and from their union sprang Jesse, James, Elizabeth (Maxey), Alexander, Samuel, Nancy (Conkin), Belew and Marinda (Spear). On January 15, 1847, James Harlan married Sarah, daughter of John and Anna (Hayes) Ray, of Monroe County (born August 7, 1825), and to them have been born Avery, Jane (Bailey and Reaves), Sarah T. (Comer), Georgiana (deceased), Priscilla (Akers), Cora B. (Denton), Elizabeth, Duncan (deceased), Lafayette (deceased), John J., Nevada, and Franklin P. Mr. Harlan is a farmer by occupation, owning 1,100 acres of productive and well improved land, in good condition and in a fine state of cultivation, all of which he has acquired by his own efforts. He is a member of the Christian Church, and in politics affiliates with the Democratic party.
