Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. FRANCIS HARRIS was born in Monroe County April 20, 1832, within a quarter of a mile of where he now resides. He was a member of Company H, Ninth Kentucky Infantry, with which he served from October 25, 1861, to the same day of the following year. He was at Corinth and at several minor battles and skirmishes. His father, George W. Harris, was also born in Monroe County, about two and one-half miles from the present residence of his son. He was a son of Francis Harris, who was born in North Carolina and moved at an early day to Monroe Couty, Ky., of which he was among the first settlers. Francis was a son of John Harris, who was a soldier during the entire Revolutionary war and was of English descent. George W. Harris married first, about 1829, Jane, daughter of John and Sarah (Jones) Bennett, of Monroe County. She was born about 1810, and bore her husband the following children: Sally W. (Miller), our subject, Turner G. and Nancy T. G. (Frazier). His second marriage took place in 1866, with Mary Wilson; they had no children. Francis (subject) has also been twice married, first in May, 1853, to America M., daughter of James and Mary (Roland) Hutchens, of Monroe County. To them were born Wilson P., Mary T. (Sartain), Eliza J. (Witty), and Loretta and Lusetta (twins, both deceased). His second marriage took place November 17, 1864, with Amanda C., daughter of Hiram K. and Mahala (Howard) Walling. To them have been born Hiram W., Francis G. (deceased), George Francis and Felix R. (deceased). Mr. Harris has become the owner, by his own labor, of 100 acres of well improved and productive land in a fine state of cultivation. He is a member of the Christian Church, a thoroughly self-made man, and in politics is a Republican.
