Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. JOHN C. HOWARD, was born in Monroe County, June 22, 1822, and is the son of Thomas and Catharine (Clemmons) Howard, who had born to them three sons and three daughters, all of whom lived to be grown. Thomas Howard was born in Monroe County in 1802, was an extensive farmer and slave owner, and a son of William Howard. William was born and reared in North Carolina, and married Jane Hart, of South Carolina; he came to Monroe County in 1802, and settled five miles west of Tompkinsville, where a farm was entered and improved of several hundred acres; was a slave holder. He and wife were of English descent. Mrs. Catherine Howard was born and reared in Jackson County, Tenn., a daughter of John Clemmons, a native of North Carolina and of Dutch descent. Mr. Clemmons was a farmer, and a soldier in the war of the Revolution, 1776; he emigrated to Jackson County, Tenn., about 1790; was a slave owner and married Elizabeth Eagle, who was of Dutch descent and a native of South Carolina. John C. Howard was reared on the farm and received a common English education. He remained with his parents until he arrived at maturity, when he engaged in farming four years; then he engaged in mercantile business in Fountain Run for five years with success. In 1852 he located where he now resides, two miles southeast of Fountain Run, on 433 acres, which he has mostly cleared and improved with a good residence, orchard, etc. He now owns about 1,000 acres on both banks of Barren River, 400 acres of which are under cultivation, all of which he has acquired by his own efforts. The only legacy he ever received consisted of some slaves, which he lost in 1863. He married, April 1, 1852, Nancy P. Dunn, of Allen County, a daughter of John A., and Margaret (Bright) Dunn, natives of Garrard County, Ky., who immigrated to Allen County, Ky., in 1825. To Mr. and Mrs. Howard were born twelve children: Thomas H., Margaret D. (deceased), Catharine C. Hayes, Elizabeth J. Button, Matilda E. C. Ross, Lucy A. (deceased), John W., Mary D., Martha E., Hattie M., a babe deceased, and Ivy. Mr. Howard and wife are members of the Baptist Church; he was a member of the Grange; in politics he is a Democrat and cast his first presidential vote for James K. Polk.
