JOSEPH LLOYD was born August 29, 1838, in Washington County, Tenn., and is the only son of Abel and Elizabeth (Hayes) Lloyd, who had also two daughters. Abel was a farmer; was elected magistrate three terms in Tennessee; immigrated to Monroe County, Ky., and located where Joseh now resides, on Indian Creek, near Flippin, in 1852, where he purchased 200 acres, which he mostly cleared and improved; was twice elected magistrate in Monroe County, and departed this life in June, 1873, aged sixty-four years. He assisted in qualifying and swearing into service the first State troops organized in his community; also served three terms as constable in Monroe County. He was a son of James Lloyd, who was born in Ireland and brought to the United States by his parents about 1795, and settled in Maryland; thence emigrated to Tennessee, Greene Coutny, where he married Mary Shields, and resided there during his life; extensively engaged in farming. Mrs. Elizabeth Lloyd was born in September, 1809, in Greene County, Tenn., a daughter of Joseph and Sarena (Cunningham) Hayes, who were both born and reared in Greene County, Tenn. Joseph Hayes served with Gen. Jackson in the war of 1812, and was wounded at the battle of New Orleans; was also an extensive farmer and stock raiser. Joseph Lloyd was reared on a farm, and received a good common school English education. He remained with his parents until his marriage, after which he took care of his parents until their death. He married, October 20, 1859, Louisa Arterburn, of Monroe County, daughter of Elza and Elizabeth (Douglass) Arterburn. Mrs. Lloyd's father, Eliza Arterburn, was a farmer, and came to Indian Creek, Monroe County, about 1845. He was a son of James Arterburn, who was born and reared in Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the parents of five children: Mary E., Eliza J., William T., John W., and Abel N. Mr. Loyd is also a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a Granger. He has lived where he now resides, since he was fourteen years of age, on 205 acres. For seven years he followed wool carding; was also engaged in distilling for four years; and was engaged three years in the mercantile business, but has since been constantly engaged in farming. He was elected magistrate in 1868, and re-elected in 1872. He is highly esteemed in his community as a good citizen and neighbor. In politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for James Buchanan.
