H. N. MARTIN was born July 21, 1837, five miles south of Greenville, Ky., 
and is the second of three children born to William C. and America (Niblack)
Martin, natives of Virginia and Fayette Counties, respectively, and of
English and Scotch Irish descent.  William C. was the son of William and
Virgina (Campbell) Martin, natives of Virginia.  William Martin immigrated to
Muhlenburgh [sic] County, Ky., about 1802; was a farmer.  The mother of our 
subject was a daughter of Hugh and Florence (Campbell) Niblack, natives of 
Virginia; were early settlers of Kentucky; first in Fayette and later in 
Muhlenburgh County.  Hugh Niblack was a millwright and of Scotch-Irish 
origin.  H. N. Martin was reared on a farm, and lived with his parents 
until about twenty-seven years of age, when he engaged in the saw-mill 
business for about four years.  In 1869 he engaged in the manufacture of 
plug tobacco in Greenville, Ky., in which he has been engaged ever since; 
he started with a capacity of about 10,000 pounds and now manufactures 
about 200,000 pounds per year.  He was married December 12, 1873, to 
Ophelia Griggsby, of Muhlenburgh County, Ky., native of Missouri, and a
daughter of John and Ellen (Martin) Griggsby, natives of Ohio and
Muhlenburgh Counties, of English and Scotch-Irish descent.  Mr. and Mrs.
Martin are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church; they have four
children: Walter, Aaron, Estella and Louella.  Mr. Martin is a member of
