Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. THOMAS H. MONKS was born in Louisville October 8, 1837. His father, Joseph Monks, was born in ENgland, and was a merchant at Louisville for more than forty years. At the age of five years he came to America with his parents, who located in Mercer County, Ky., and later moved to Fayette County. In 1830 he (Joseph) engaged in the wholesale whisky [sic] business, at which he was very successful. He married Harriet Reese, of Pennsylvania, who died June 13, 1880, the mother of four daughters and three sons. Of these children our subject is the eldest. He was educated at Drennon Military School, Henry County, and Auburndale College, Boston, Mass, acquiring, in addition to a good English education, a knowledge of Latin and French. He married, October 15, 1867, Lou Moses, daughter of William and Amanda W. Moses, of Louisville. Two sons and three daughters were born to their union. Mr. Monks owns thirty acres eleven miles from Louisville. Politically he is a Democrat. He is engaged in farming in Oldham County, near Pewee Valley.
