McCarty, a native of Fleming County, Ky., was born February 1, 1856, and is a son of John and Lucy (Cummins) McCarty. John McCarty, also a native of Fleming County, was born in 1812, was quite a stock dealer and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He died in 1867. He was a son of Thomas McCarty. Lucy (Cummins) McCarty was born in Cynthiana, Ky., in 1816, and is still living. The subject of this sketch is the youngest of ten living children, viz: Lucy Hildreth, Lizzie Kirkum, John A., Anna Gay, Charlie, Thomas, America Stardeford, David, George and A.J. The last named was educated at the common schools, and at the age of seventeen commenced clerking in a store in Falmouth, Ky., where he was engaged until 1882. He then located in Somerset, Pulaski County, and opened a general store, where everything is first-class in every respect. January 23, 1883, he married Miss Estella McManama, of Frankfort, Ky., a daughter of Judge O.D. McManama. They have two living children: Obera and an infant. Mrs. McCarty is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. McCarty is Democratic in politics.
