Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Pulaski County John Slessinger, a merchant of Somerset, Ky., is a native of Baltimore, Md., and was born December 31, 1857. He is a son of Samuel and Mina (Rosenthal) Slessinger. Samuel Slessinger was born in Hammelburg, Bavaria, Germany, in 1821; he came to the United States about 1845, remained in Baltimore, MD, about ten years, then went to Cincinnati, Ohio. He was at Millersburg, and Paris, Ky., each one year; he was a tailor by trade, and was a son of John Slessinger, who was also a native of Germany. Mina (Rosenthal) Slessinger was born in Germany, a daughter of Samuel Rosenthal. John Slessinger is the eldest of three living children, the other two being Henry and Lewis. Henry, who is a partner in the store, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 15, 1860, and received his education at the public schools of that city. He was a salesman in Isaac Zeiller & Sons' wholesale house in Cincinnati for thirteen years. He moved to Somerset in 1885 and formed partnership with his brother, the subject of this sketch, under the firm name of Slessinger Bros. Lewis Slessinger is in Cincinnati. John Slessinger also received his education at the public schools of Cincinnati. He was engaged at the Volksbratt, a German printing office, for six years, and is a practical printer. In 1880 he opened a general store in Somerset. June 18, 1884, he married Sallie Frank, of Cincinnati, a daughter of Simon and Fannie Frank. One child has blessed this union, Helen. Mr. Slessinger is a member of the Sons of Israel Lodge, of Cincinnati. In politics he is a Republican.
