Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Rockcastle County Milton P. Newcomb was born in Rockcastle County, Ky., May 28, 1828. His father, Moses Newcomb, a native of Garrard County, Ky., was born in 1769, was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools. He moved to Rockcastle County in 1812, where he was a farmer by occupation and a large slave-holder. His wife, Stacy (Langford) Newcomb, was a daughter of Stephen Langford, who was the first settler at what is now Mount Vernon. They had six children, viz: Stephen, Emily, William, Nancy, Milton P. and Jonathan. Milton P. Newcomb was reared and educated in Rockcastle County. He remained with his father on the farm until about nineteen years of age, when he engaged in the milling business, which he followed until 1852, when he moved to Mount Vernon, and engaged in merchandising until 1863. He then engaged in the hotel business at Mount Vernon, and has followed the same ever since. September 19, 1856, he married Ann E., a daughter of William Smith, who married Nancy Withers, of Lincoln County, and resided in Rockcastle County until his death. To this union have been born seven children, viz: Nancy B., Ann L., Mary M., Mattie L., William J., Robert L., and Lena. Mr. Newcomb is a Prohibitionist in politics, and is a member of the Christian Church.
