SMITH, farmer, P. O. Newtown, was born in Scott County, Feb. 4, 1815. His father was Nelson Smith, born in Virginia, Sept. 1781; occupation, a farmer; died July 1, 1841. Maiden name of his mother was Sarah Kerr, born in Virginia Nov. 21, 1785, and died in 1853. His parents had ten children, seven sons and three daughters; he was educated in country schools and at Georgetown College; began life in the practice of medicine; was married in Scott County, Oct. 25, 1836. The maiden name of his wife was Julia A. Coulter, born in Clark County, Feb. 1, 1818; her father being Joseph Coulter, was born in Delaware in 1778; her mother, Elizabeth Harris was born in Clark County. He has been engaged principally in farming, and also in the practice of medicine. He has seven children, four of whom are dead, the names of the living being: James D., Jos. C. and N. Rhodes; dead--Sarah E., Anna A., Emma H. and Mary C. Religion, Presbyterian; politics, Democratic; society, Masonic; also a Knight Templar.
