COLGROVE was born in the State of New York, January 8, 1827, a son of Calvin and Elizabeth (Vanburen) Colgrove. His parents died when he was an infant, and although he did not have an opportunity to obtain an education, yet he has instructed himself and is a well-informed man. At the age of twenty-two he commenced to learn the carpenter's trade, also millwrighting, and is a fine workman at both, having no superior in the county. Several years ago he came to Kentucky. In 1867 he married Mrs. L. J. Finley, a native of Shelby County, and a daughter of Elijah and Rebecca (Lewis) Booth. Her first husband, James H. Finley, died in 1865, and by him she had five children: Columbus, Lon, Mollie, Lena and Belle. Mrs. Colgrove's father was born in Virginia, a son of William and Julia (Johns) Booth. Mr. Colgrove is a Master Mason, and with his wife a member of the Baptist Church. He owns 130 acres of land in Christiansburg Precinct, Shelby County.
