Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. REV. AARON BRIGHTWELL KNIGHT, a native of Todd County, Ky., was born February 24, 1824, a son of Robert B. and Kittie (Bailey) Knight, who were native Virginians, of English extraction. Mr. Knight remained on the farm during his boyhood, attended a boarding school in Russellville, and entered Centre College in Danville, from which he graduated in 1845, having spent three and one-half years in the institution. In 1846 he was licensed to preach and, immediately entered Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey, where he spent three years. He was ordained to the full work of the ministry in 1850. In 1858, he accepted a call to Burk's Branch Church, Shelby County. In his ministry he has spent eleven years at Simpsonville, one year at Clay Village, and twenty-three years at Burk's Branch. He was moderator of Long Run Association, which included the churches of Louisville under its supervision, one of the most important in the State. This place he held from 1865 to 1877, and in 1863 was elected moderator of the general association of Kentucky. He retired from the ministry in 1882 on account of ill health. He married, in 1851, Miss Mary J. Waters, of Shelby County, daughter of John Waters deceased. She died January 10, 1868. October 19, 1869, he married Miss Josephine Ryland, of Richmond, Va., and daughter of Robert Ryland, D.D. Only one child of his first marriage survives, Mary Brightwell, wife of Dr. P. A. Shely; two children by his last marriage, Ryland and Norvell Brightwell. His farm consists of 300 acres on Mt. Eden Pike, three miles southeast of Shelbyville, and is pleasantly located. Mr. Knight is a pleasant, affable gentleman, and since his retirement from the ministry travels a great deal for his health.
