Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. GEORGE R. SMITH, of Shelbyville, was born in Shelby County, Ky., December 18, 1851, a son of George and Malinda (Bullard) Smith, natives of Virginia. The father was born in 1805, and early settled in the southeast portion of Shelby County. George R. Smith, our subject, was reared on the home farm, and was educated at the schools of the county and at the Kentucky Military Institute. For several years he has been dealing in fast horses, trotters, etc., which he trains and ships to all parts of the country, his fame as an expert trainer being quite extensive. In 1871 he married Miss Willie Chowning, of Owen County, Ky., and this marriage has been blessed by the birth of five children: Lillian, Linda, Lewis, Lucy and George.
