The Kentucky branch of the Thomas family is descended from Morris Thomas, who migrated from South Wales in 1768, and located near Philadelphia, Penn. He was the father of eleven children, of which number ten were born in Wales. The eleventh and youngest child was born near Philadelphia. The children who were born in Wales were Owen, Jephtha, Hannah, Elizabeth, Susan, Sarah, Rachel, John, Elisha and David. The eleventh, Oswald, was born, as before stated, near Philadelphia, September 10, 1769. The family moved from Pennsylvania to the south branch of the Potomac, in Virginia, shortly after the birth of Oswald. Owen, Jephtha, Hannah and their parents died in Virginia. The remaining members of the family, including Oswald, removed to Kentucky in 1790, and located in the vicinity of Bardstown, after which they located in Harrodsburg, at which point Oswald was united in marriage with Mary Pogue, in 1794, and having exchanged a house and lot in Harrodsburg for 1,500 acres of land on the head waters of Fox run in Shelby County, he located on the same in 1790. The product of the marriage between Oswald Thomas and Mary Pogue was thirteen children, viz.: Morris, Wilson, Lindsey, John Ambrose, Preston, Edwin, Cassranda, Ann, Betsey, Paulina, Harriett, Martha D. and Mary P. Mary Pogue was born in Virginia, March 10, 1775. Her ancestors were Scotch-Irish. Her parents located in Kentucky when she was six months old, and she died May 31, 1854. Her husband, Oswald Thomas, died in August, 1853. John Ambrose Thomas was married to Mahala R. Yount, in 1832, whose descendants are E. B. Thomas, Mary E. Straughan, J. W. Thomas, America Ellen Thomas (died in infancy) and John Ambrose Thomas, the latter being located in Monroe County, near Paris, Mo. The remaining members of the family are located in Shelby County, Ky., partly on the same land originally purchased by Oswald Thomas. Mahala R. Yount was a daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Redman) Yount; she raised thirteen children. Jonathan Yount served in the battles of Piqua Plains and Fort Defiance, then in the territory of Ohio. He was born in 1785, and died in 1862. His father, George Yount, was born in Delaware, served in the Revolutionary Army, and was captured and paroled by the British; came to Kentucky, joined Gen. W. H. Harrison's forces, and fought in the war with the Indians. His son, Jonathan, was born in fort, at Lynch's Station, now Shelbyville, Ky. John Ambrose Thomas was born May 28, 1807, and died January 23, 1843. James W. Thomas was born February 26, 1838, and was married December 14, 1882, to Mary E. Wilson, of Henry County, Ky., the daughter of W. B. and Elizabeth (Offutt) Wilson. The result of their union is a daughter, Clara May Thomas, born May 2, 1884. E. B. Thomas was born August 15, 1834; was married to Lucy E. Goodridge, a daughter of F. H. Goodridge, of Henry County, July 25, 1860, and the result of this union was two boys: Edwin and Clarence Wilson Thomas. Mary E. Thomas was born May 4, 1836, and was married to B. B. Straughan, October 18, 1859; the result of this union is two boys: J. H. W. Straughan and Luis Straughan. John Ambrose Thomas was born April 9, 1842, and joined the Confederate Army in 1861, under Gen. Buckner, was captured at Ft. Donelson in 1862, and taken to Camp Morton, at Indianapolis, and there remained in prison for seven months, and then exchanged and took part in all of the battles under Hood and Joseph E. Johnston. Finally he surrendered under Dick Taylor, after the battle at Mobile, and came home in June, 1865. He married Lizzie Rees, and by her had three children--two sons and one daughter: Calvin F. Thomas, Fannie Thomas and Will Thomas.
