Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. JOSEPH MILLER, was born in Trimble County, Ky., November 16, 1809, the second of nine children born to Michael and Sarah (Daugherty) Miller, natives of Maryland and Kentucky. Michael Miller was a farmer, and came to Kentucky at an early date. The Daughertys were originally from Virginia, and were among the earliest settlers of Kentucky. Joseph was reared on the farm, and when a boy of six years moved with his parents to Orange County, Ind., where he remained until about 1836. He then moved to Missouri and two years later returned to Orange County, Ind., and remained for a short time. Subsequently he went South to Mississippi, and in 1846 went to the Mexican war and participated in the battles of Buena Vista and Monterey. At the close of the Mexican war he returned to his native county, where he has since resided engaged in farming. He settled where he now resides at Bedford, in 1879, and has 125 acres of fine land. He married, March 18, 1847, Nancy Latty, daughter of Davis Latty, one of the pioneers of Kentucky. To this union were born three children: Davis L., William W. and John; the last is deceased. Mrs. Miller died in 1862, and about 1864 our subject married Emma Nicholson, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Connell) Nicholson. To this union was born one child, who died in infancy. Mrs. Emma Miller died in 1865, and July 30, 1867, he married Miss Juan Pierce, daughter of William G. and Mary (Gatewood) Pierce of Trimble County. To this union were born three children: Josie M., Lillie and Charley (twins), but Charley is deceased. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
