Notes by Karen Turner, kturner@m.al8.com JAMES A TURNER Farmer and merchant of Boxville Precinct, is the son of Matthew and Mary (Farmer) Turner; his grandfather Matthew Turner married a Miss MUSE; his grandfather Arthur Farmer married a Miss FLOURNOY. [NOTE: This is incorrect; James' paternal grandmother has not been proven as being a Muse: his maternal grandparents were Daniel Farmer and Martha Flournoy; his grandfather named James' mother as Polly in his will-kkt 1997.] All his ancestors were Virginians. He (James A. Turner) was born in Chesterfield Co., VA 8 July 1816. He received some two years' training in Chesterfield County schools. In 1840 Mr Turner went to NC and married Elizabeth E. Minnis of Franklin Co., NC on 17 March, 1840. At this time he was engaged in railroading, and he returned in 1841 with his wife to VA. where he farmed. In Oct 1845 he returned to NC and remained there until 1856 when he came to West Virginia, where he remained one year, coming to Kentucky in September of 1857. During eleven yrs of this time he was preaching in the Christian church. Mr Turner has six children, two of whom are dead. BENJAMIN K. married Lou E Hopkins; Emma married De Witt Yarbrough, Clerk of Webster Co at that time, but now a merchant at Poseyville, Indiana. James N. married Mollie Davidson, and John Y married Jenny Brooks. In politics Mr Turner is a Greenbacker. He made the race for the Legislature in 1862 against Tighlman Pierson and was beaten by only 16 votes; he was a member of the branch of the Christian church organized by James O. Kelly, for 11 years, and when he came to Union county in 1857, he united with the Christians here, but in 1861 he left them and remained independent for several years when he joined the Universalists, with who he has since remained; he is an active member, but not ordained. He has 184** acres of land, eighty acres of which is cultivated. His store 2 miles south of Boxville is filled with a good line of general merchandise, such as dry goods, groceries, boots, shoes, etc. Mr Turner is spirited, active, quick to decide and act on all questions in which he is convinced he is right."
