Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. UNDERWOOD BUTLER, a substantial farmer, was born in Barren County, and is a son of Charles and Susan (Oneal) Butler, who were born and reared in Culpeper County, Va., and immigrated to Ohio, where they lived a few years and then moved to Barren County, Ky., where Charles Butler, who was of English descent, became a prosperous and substantial farmer. Underwood Butler was born and reared on a farm. He received but little education, having attended school but six months during his life. He remained with his parents while they lived, and has followed farming with uniform success. Mr. Butler was married, January 26, 1869, to Sarah E. Duff, of Barren County, a daughter of William W. and Winnifred (Butler) Duff. William W. Duff was born in Scottsville, Allen County, Ky., and removed from there to Barren County. He was a blacksmith by trade, and a son of Fielding Duff, who married Elizabeth Willis; both were among the first settlers of Barren County. Fielding Duff was a soldier of the war of 1812, and was in the battle of New Orleans, from which place he walked home to Kentucky after receiving his discharge. He also was a blacksmith by trade. Winnifred (Butler) Duff was born in Culpeper County, Va., and moved from there to Barren County, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. Butler have had born to them eight children - six now living: Luther A., George W., Hattie D., Ella F., Peter and John U. After their marriage they located in Barren County, near Rocky Hill. In 1874 Mr. Butler located where he now resides, four miles southeast of Smith's Grove, on 140 acres, but now owns 180 acres of fine land in a good state of cultivation. At the breaking out of the war he volunteered in Col. (now Gen.) Nuckol's regiment, with the understanding that it was for the protection of the Union. The regiment afterward espousing the Southern cause he refused to follow, believing secession wrong, and returned to his home. Mr. and Mrs. Butler are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
