Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. A. P. DURHAM was born in Allen County, Ky., December 15, 1839, and is a son of Rev. John G. and Caroline (Thacker) Durham. John G. Durham was born in Halifax County, Va., in 1813; his wife in North Carolina in 1813. The paternal grandfather of A. P. Durham was John Durham, a native of Halifax County, Va., born in 1760; he was a soldier of the Revolutionary war and had two brothers in that conflict. They were taken prisoners and never heard from afterward. The great-grand-father was John Durham, a native of Maryland. The Durham family came to Kentucky in 1818, and settled in Allen County, in what was known as the Carolina District. There the grandfather of Mr. Durham died in 1842. The mother of our subject died March 24, 1870. John G. Durham joined the Baptist Church in 1838; was ordained as a minister in that denomination June 30, 1846, and since that time has been in the active minstry. He has baptized more than 2,000 people in that church. A. P. Durham came to this county with his parents in 1856, and settled three miles east of Bowling Green. He was reared on the farm, and obtained his education at the country schools. In the spring of 1868 he came to this city, and in the fall of the same year began general merchandising, which he continued until 1870, when he began the grocery business which he continued until 1880, when he sold his stock of goods and for four years was in the employ of the Adams and Southern Express Companies. At the time of his resignation he received a most complimentary letter from his employers, and has the assurance of a reinstatement at any time that he may desire it. In January, 1884, he resumed the grocery business in Bowling Green and is now doing a good business. The marriage of Mr. Durham occurred in April, 1862, with Phoebe A. Gardner, a native of Edmonson County. To this union was born one child, viz.: John W., deceased. Mrs. Durham died September 5, 1864. In 1869 Mr. Durham married Sallie C. Billingsly, of Allen County, this State. They have one child, viz.; Alfred D. Mr. Durham is a Democrat. In December, 1884, he was elected to the city council. He became a Mason in 1867.
