ELROD was born October 8, 1842, in Talladega County, Ala., and is a son of George W. and Thursey (Keys) Elrod, who were born and reared in Rutherford County, Tenn., and had born to them three sons and four daughters. George W. Elrod was born about 1802; emigrated to Alabama about 1830; there he became one of the leading and wealthy farmers of his section, and was a large slave owner. He was a son of Jerry Elrod, who was born in Virginia, of Dutch descent, and was a soldier of 1812. Mrs. Thursey Elrod was of Irish descent. Thomas J. Elrod was reared on a farm, and received an excellent classical education in Talladega College. After finishing his course he engaged in teaching for five or six years in Alabama and Tenessee. In the fall of 1862 he enlisted in a company under Gen. Hill as State guard. In the spring of 1864 he was discharged from State service and again engaged in teaching, which he continued until the fall of 1878, when he changed his vocation to that of druggist - first at Buffalo Valley, Putnam Co., Ala. In the spring of 1880 he located at Three Forks, Warren County, whee he has erected a building and is doing a good business, in the drug trade. In August, 1884, he was appointed postmaster at Three Forks. He is a member of the Christian Church and in politics is a Democrat, having cast his first presidential vote for Tilden.
