GOODE was born September 10, 1836, in Warren County, the fifth of three sons and three daughters born to Samuel V. and Elizabeth (Taylor) Goode, natives, respectively, of Virginia and North Carolina. Samuel V. Goode came to Warren County in 1810, took part in the battle of Tippecanoe, and for many years was a boatman, having made over forty trips on flat-boats to New Orleans, and having walked back eighteen times. He was also a school-teacher and farmer, and for three or four years a magistrate of Warren County; he died March, 1862, at the age of seventy-one. John C. Goode, father of Samuel V., was also a teacher and a slave holder. He married Dolly Venable, of Virginia, and came to Warren County in 1810, and here died in 1844; he was a son of Robert Goode, of Prince Edward County, and of Scotch descent. Henry A. Goode, at the age of twenty-one began life for himself as a farmer at the junction of Green and Barren Rivers. In September, 1861, he enlisted in Company E, Eleventh Kentucky Infantry; was mustered as orderly sergeant, and was with his regiment all its engagements, except that of Knoxville, where he was in [the] hospital being treated for a wound received by a fall from a horse, September 18, 1863. He was discharged as sergeant at Bowling Green in December, 1864. He married, February 15, 1866, Mary E. Alexander, and to this union have been born five children, of whom four are living: Vernette, Faustina O., Samuel P. and James W. In 1867 Mr. Goode moved to Smith [sic] Grove, and in 1869 to a farm of 137 acres, southeast of the town, which farm he has since increased to 250 acres. Philip Alexander, the father of Mrs. Goode, is a native of Cumberland County, Ky., is a son of Ingram Alexander, and married Miss Polly Dougherty. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Goode are active members of the Christian Church; in politics he is a Republican, and also a Mason and Odd Fellow, and at one time was a Granger.
