Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. WILLIAM J. STEELE, deceased, was born August 10, 1809, and was a son of John and Anna Steele, the former a native of Ireland, and the latter born near Lexington, Ky. Col. John Steele, the father of William J. Steele, was a soldier in our war against Great Britain in 1812, and was a resident of Woodford County, Ky., where William J. was born. The latter was reared on the farm, but graduated from the university at Danville, and was also a graduate from the law department. He began, and for twenty years continued practice at Gainesville, Ala.; in 1853 he came to Versailles, Ky.; two years later he was elected county judge of Woodford County, and served sixteen consecutive years, when he retired to his farm of 380 acres, where he died January 11, 1884. He was married, August 10, 1833, to Mary D. Winston, a native of Tuscumbia, Ala., and of the children born to this marriage eight are living: John A., Thomas, Jane Ann (who was married to George T. Hord, of Midway), Mary P., Davis, Andrew F., William G. and James W. The deceased children were named Metcalfe, Eliza Ann and Theophilus.
