Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. THE STOUT FAMILY. Amos Stout was a native of New Jersey, and came to Kentucky early in the history of the State, settling in Mason County, Ky., near Maysville. He was born in June, 1794, and died in June, 1830. His wife was Miss Olivia Hicks, daughter of William and Betty (Harris) Hicks, who were born in Virginia, but lived in Woodford County, where Mr. Stout settled after their marriage. Their farm was a mile and a half south of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where the widow resided after the death of her husband many years. She died January 19, 1871. They had three sons: John, born November 16, 1821; William, born January 19, 1824, and Robert Hicks, born March 18, 1828. John, the eldest son, was reared on the farm and received a common-school education. For a few years in his youth he was engaged in selling goods as clerk in Frankfort, Ky., but after his marriage continued a farmer the remainder of his life, and was a successful and enlightened cultivator of the soil, as well as one of the most estimable and valuable citizens of the county. He was married May 23, 1844, to Miss Susan L. Bohannon, daughter of German and Sally (Hamilton) Bohannon, of Woodford County. Her grandfathers were Elliott Bohannon and Alexander Hamilton, of Virginia. For many years Mr. Stout was moderator of the Elkhorn Baptist Association, and had also been for years chairman of the board of trustees of the Cleveland Orphans' Home, at Versailles, and held these places at the period of his death, November 30, 1833. He was the father of nine children: Ada, Louisa, Olivia, Isabella, Fannie, German, Evelyn, Nettie and John. The second son of Amos Stout, William, was educated in the common schools, and has followed farming all his life, until within the last three years, since when he has resided in Midway. He was married in 1848 to Judith A. Jameson, of Montgomery County, Ky., who died January 17, 1871. Four of their children are living: Amos, Rachel, Newton and Olivia. Robert H. Stout was the fourth son (the fifth child) of Amos and Olivia (Hicks) Stout. Robert Stout was reared on a farm, but early in life began a mercantile training as salesman in a store, in which he continued seven years, in the meantime going to school as much as was possible, thus receiving a good common-school education. Afterward he attended the celebrated school of Prof. B. B. Sayre at Frankfort, having for schoolmates George T. Vest, now United States senator from Missouri, and Judge Holland, of Louisville. In 1850 he came to Midway and formed a co-partnership with J. W. Clelland in general merchandise under the firm name of Stout & Clelland, which was continued three or four years. He married, November 30, 1853, Miss Fannie L., daughter of George Gillespie (deceased). In 1856 he moved to Clay County, Mo., where he remained until the breaking out of the civil war. His home was then so harassed by guerrillas and assassins as to render life unsafe, consequently he returned to Woodford County, Ky., in 1862, and engaged in the grain and general commission business, which he continued until 1883. At this time he was appointed to fill an unexpired term of sheriff from May, 1883, until the election and qualification of a successor. At the next August election he became a candidate for sheriff, and was elected and qualified as such the 1st of January following. In August 1886, he was again a candidate for sheriff and again elected, and now holds the office, the term of which will expire at the end of the year 1888. Mr. Stout has two children: Edward G. and Robert Lee. He is a member of the Baptist Church and a member of the F. & A. M.
