W. “Ward” Ecton, Sr., died Thursday, September 26, 2003, at Johnson Mathers Nursing Home. She was born in Nicholas County to the late John Samuel & Tevis Shrout Wilson. She was a retired employee of Nicholas County Hospital and attended Eastern State Normal School in Richmond. She was a member of Carlisle United Methodist Church and had been a member of Moorefield United Methodist Church for 60 years prior to moving to Carlisle in 1980. She served on the church board, as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent. She was also an officer with the Methodist Women. She was a member of the Moorefield Homemakers and had served as president of the Moorefield Homemakers and president of the Nicholas County Homemakers. Survivors are: three sons - John (& Patsy) Ecton of Carlisle, Paul (& Mary) Ecton of Milford, Ohio, and Ralph (& Helen) Ecton, Lexington; a daughter - Betty (& Ellis) Flora, Frankfort; a sister - Lorene (& Tom) Brough, Lexington; 13 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, J. W. Ecton, Jr., and a granddaughter. Services were conducted Monday, September 29, at Mathers-Gaunce Funeral Home by Rev. Howard Livingood. Lowe, 73, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, September 26, 2003, at Johnson Mathers Nursing Home in Carlisle after a long illness. She was born in Cornishville, daughter of the late Finis J. & Cora Gritton Sims. She was a sales clerk at the former J. J. Newberry’s and the Ben Franklin stores in Harrodsburg and was a member of the Southside Christian Church. Survivors include: a son - Kevin Lowe, Harrodsburg; a daughter - Glenna (& Dennis) Norton, Carlisle; two sisters - Laura Sims Wright of Mercer County and Mary Sims Easterling, Middletown, Ohio; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: four brothers - Hassell B., Cecil J., Clyde & Everett Sims; and a sister - Eda Mae Sims. She was born in Montgomery County to the late Elmer Lee & Susan Jolly Hawkins. She was a homemaker. Other survivors are: three daughters - Anne Frances Hughes of Fleming County and Virginia Mae Castro & Susan Rae Wright, Carlisle; four brothers - Irvin, Rondall, Roy & Gary Hawkins, Carlisle; three sisters - Virginia Kiser & Eva Fitzwater of Carlisle and Linda Hendrix, Mt. DONNA JEAN CASSITY Donna Jean Cassity, 46, of Reno, Nevada, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at her home. Donna was born in San Francisco, California, to Samuel & Vera (Walker) Cassity, formerly of Carlisle. A resident of Reno since 1967, Donna enjoyed stain glass work, gardening and her home. She was especially fond of her cat Jasper. She is survived by: her parents - Dal & Vera Shirey; a sister - Sammie Hunt; a brother - Larry (& Nancy) Cassity; two step-brothers - Alan (& Donna) and Norm (& Debbie) Shirey; a step-sister - Cookie (& Sam) Uhle; two nieces - Cristeena (& Bob) Benefiel and Raina (& Beau) Harmon; three nephews - Chase & Ryan Cassity and Jason Shirey; five great nieces - Heidi, Caitlyn, Sara & Natalie Benefiel and Shayla Harmon; a great nephew - Matthew Benefiel; and her loving and faithful cat, Jasper. Donna was loved by many friends and will be greatly missed. A celebration of her life was held Tuesday, September 23 at First Baptist Church of Reno. LOUISE KENNEDY WALKER HOAGLAND Louise Kennedy Walker Hoagland, 97, of Charlotte, North Carolina, widow of Hobart Walker and wife of Dr. Robert J. Hoagland, died Friday, October 3, 2002. She was a native of Carlisle and daughter of the late Harry & Elizabeth Kennedy and sister of the late Ruth Kennedy Lambert. She was educated in Carlisle schools and received a degree from the University of Kentucky. Survivors: also include: three daughters - Carol W. Garvin of Carlisle, Judith W. Scyster of Pinehurst, North Carolina, and Emily W. Stakland, Brighton, Iowa; two stepchildren; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was born in Bourbon County to the late Otis & Lilly Hodge Coldiron. He was a retired mechanic. He attended the Bible Missionary Church in Millersburg and was a veteran of the U. S. Army. Earl “Sam” Finch, Jr., 71, of Carlisle, husband of Anna Lee Hollar Finch, died Friday, October 17, 2003, at Johnson Mathers Nursing Home after a long illness. He was born in Nicholas County to the late Earl Sr. & Adaline Morris Finch. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired Chief of Police after 35 years service with the Carlisle Police Department. He was a member of the VFW, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Kentucky Peace Officers Association. Other survivors are: three sons - Doug (& Susan) Finch of Cullman, Alabama, Mike (& Mary) Finch of Corbin and Darrell Finch, Flemingsburg; three grandsons - Earl, James & Dylan; three step grandchildren - Marilyn, Joe & Ronda; five step great grandchildren; and a sister - Pearl Adams, Bloomfield Heights, Michigan. Honorary bearers were members of the Carlisle Police Department. EDNA HURST HUDDLESON Edna Hurst Huddleson, 91, of Carlisle, died Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at Johnson Mathers Nursing Home. She was born in Nicholas County to the late Ben C. & Daisy Huffstetter Huddleson. She started her education in the Taylors Creek School and graduated from Carlisle High School and the University of Kentucky. She was an elementary school teacher for 46 years, teaching at Taylors Creek, Parks, Headquarters, Millersburg, Ruddles Mill, Carlisle Elementary and Nicholas County Elementary. She was a member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary and a life member of Kentucky Congress of Parents & Teachers and the Carlisle Christian Church. She was a past member of the Johnson Mathers Health Care Auxiliary with 1,100 hours of volunteer service and was a lifetime member of Paris-Marie Chapter O.E.S. #167. Survivors are: a brother - Clayton Huddleson, Paris; two nieces - Wanda H. Richard of Paris and Judy Dorsey, Hartville, Ohio; and cousins Betty Barton, Madeline Hunt and Dorothy Eads. MARGARET BRETZ MITCHELL Margaret Bretz Mitchell, 80, of McCracken Street, Carlisle, wife of Edward Mitchell, died Sunday, October 19, 2003, at Nicholas County Hospital. She was born in Greenup County to the late Alfred & Nancy Jackson Bretz. She was a retired employee of Jockey International, a member of the Nicholas County Fish & Game Club and a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church. RAYMOND DUDLEY ROBINSON Raymond Dudley Robinson, 62, of Williams Street, Paris, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at his residence in Paris. He was born in Paris, a son of the late John Donald and Hazel Smith Robinson. He was a 21 year employee of the Nicholas County Board of Education. He was a US Army Veteran and was a member of the post #165.
