This Indenture made this 4th day of April, 1831. Witness that Lot P i t m a n Clerk of the Laurel County Court, by order of Jarvis Jackson, Jedidiah Hibbard, Thomas Jones, and Benjamin Catching ,Gentlemen Justices of said County Court do place and bind Hiram Whitemore orphan of Matthew Whitemore dec'd, aged 12 years, apprentice to Elisha Smith. With him to dwell and him to serve from the date here of until he shall arrive at the age of 21 years. He shall demean himself honestly and obediantly towards him and serve him on all lawful business during said term, and the said Elisha Smith and William Smith Esqr. his security for themselves their heirs Ect. and doth bind themselves to and with the said Lot P i t m a n Clerk as aforesaid and his successors in office that he the said E. Smith will well instruct the said Whitemore in the business of farming and provide him sufficent, meat, drink. apparel, washing, lodging, and mending and all other things fit and necessary for an apprentice and shall teach or cause him to be taught, reading , writting, and arithmetic, including the rule of three and pay him three pounds ten
shillings  and a decent new suit of clothes at the expiration of said term.
