From: Subject: Newland Family Question per Lincoln County Kentucky Date: Monday, January 10, 2005 11:33 PM I am writing to beseech your help in solving a family mystery. In order to solve the mystery, I need to give you some brief background: My wife, Rachel, can trace her lineage back to Boonesboro and Lincoln County, KY, very clearly via the Newland family. Rachel's fourth great grandfather was a man named Richard T. Newland. He is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Lincoln County, KY near Stanford. (see _http://www.rootsweb.com/~kylinco2/cemeteries/newland.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~kylinco2/cemeteries/newland.htm) Richard T. Newland is the son of John Newland who married Celia Hoy in 1805 or 1806. From what I can ascertain from various online sources, Celia Hoy is the daughter of William Hoy and Sarah Callaway. One "William Hoy" is listed as an earlier settler of Fort Boonesboro (see _http://www.users.mis.net/~chesnut/pages/fortboon.htm_ William Hoy was born in Bedford, VA, according to online accounts and the records of ancestry and rootsweb. Since those commercial sites rely heavy on the uploaded pedigree charts of amateurs, like me, I am wary of relying too much on the validity of that information. This is where the mystery comes in: An old family story passed down from generations has told the tale that Celia Hoy is the daughter of John Hoy and Frances (Fanny or Fannie) Callaway. Fanny Callaway was one of three children captured by Indians in July 1776. The other two captives were Elizabeth (Betsy) Callaway and Jemima Boone, daughter of Daniel Boone (see_http://www.pastseeker.com/boone/children/jemima/jemima.shtml I can find no evidence that Celia Hoy was the daughter of Frances Callaway. As much as it disturbs me, I think I need to debunk the family story, unless someone can help me fit together the pieces. Perhaps multiple marriages are the explanation? I am baffled. Many sites report that Frances Callaway was married to Capt. John Holder, who I have read elsewhere travelled from Maryland to KY in 1775 with Daniel Boone. If this is true, then Celia Hoy cannot be the daughter of Frances Callaway, as her name would have been "Celia Holder" not Celia Hoy. And we have good evidence that she was Celia Hoy, including the fact that she was named in a lawsuit over land purchases (see _http://www.shawhan.com/boone.html. So, I am back to the mystery of trying to find out who Celia Hoy's parents were. If they are indeed William Hoy and Sarah Callaway, then I unfortunately have no idea of how to make the connection to the kidnapping of Jemima Boone, et al. Do you know anything about the Hoys, the Newlands, the Callaways, or the Boones? Helping identify Celia Hoy's parents would help to solve this mystery once and for all. Many thanks for your help, in advance. Thank you, Howie Howie Schaffer 6719 Poplar Avenue Takoma Park, MD 20912 _hbschaffer@aol.com_ (mailto:hbschaffer@aol.com)
