Powell Cemetery Genealogy

I have written this genealogy for researchers interested in the 19 recorded burials from readable tombstones compiled by Shirley Dunn in 1977.  The names at the beginning of each paragraph below were all listed in Mrs. Dunn’s book, “Lincoln County, Kentucky, Marriages 1780-1850 & Tombstone Inscriptions”, c Shirley Dunn, 1977.  Edmund Powell is my wife’s (Lisa Kay Bryant Parks) 5^th Great Grandfather. Lisa has proven her lineage in D.A.R. to this patriot and progenitor of this Casey/Lincoln County family.

Edmund Powell –b. 1742 in Goochland, Goochland Co., VA, d. 1825 Casey County, KY.  Edmund removed to Casey KY after the Revolutionary War.  He was the first of the Powell’s to settle in the area. Edmund was granted a commission as a 2LT in the Amherst County Virginia Militia and served in the war.  He married Lucy Joplin (daughter of Thomas Joplin and Hannah Freeman).  Lucy died abt. 20 Sep 1813 probably on the home place near the cemetery.  While it is assumed she is buried there, only Edmund’s Stone showed up at the time of Mrs. Dunn’s transcription. 

Margaret  Powell -  b. 7 Jul 1780 in Carpenter’s Station, Lincoln, KY, d. 1 Jul 1846 Casey, KY.  She is the daughter of John Carpenter and Elizabeth Spears both buried at the Carpenter Station Cemetery.  Mrs. Dunn’s transcription incorrectly shows her YOD as 1816 at the Powell Cemetery.  Her husband was Linsey Powell (son of Edmund Powell and Lucy Joplin), b. 14 Mar 1776 in Amherst Co., VA, d. 28 Dec 1863 probably on the home place.  It is likely that Linsey is buried at the cemetery.

Edmund Powell – b. 19 Apr 1808 prob. Casey, KY, d. 8 Jan 1859 Lincoln, KY.  He is the son of Linsey Powell and Margaret Carpenter.  Edmund married Elizabeth Carpenter (daughter of Jacob Carpenter and Leah Frye.  Leah is buried at the Adam Carpenter Cemetery.  It’s not known where Jacob is buried.  He remarried after Leah’s death.  Elizabeth remarried William Williams after Edmund’s death and is buried in the Hustonville Cemetery.

Davis A Powell –  David A Powell – b. 1837 Lincoln, KY, d. 8 Jan 1859 Lincoln, KY.  David is the son of Edmund Powell and Elizabeth Carpenter.  He married Sarah McCormack.  Sarah remarried William Carroll Carpenter after David’s death and is probably buried in Sedgwick Co., KS.

Robert W Powell –  b. 27 May 1840 Lincoln, KY, d. 14 Jul 1864.  Robert is the son of Edmund Powell and Elizabeth Carpenter.  He married Margaret Rowe.  Margaret is not buried at the cemetery.

David Carpenter – b. 9 Feb 1805 in Lincoln Co., KY, d. 11 Oct 1851 prob. Lincoln, KY.  David is the son of Jacob Carpenter and Leah Frye.  David married Lucinda Powell (daughter of Linsey Powell and Margaret Carpenter).  Lucinda is buried at the Hustonville Cemetery.

George C Powell – George Carpenter Powell– b. 24 Mar 1819 prob. Casey, KY, d. 7 Jan 1898 Lincoln, KY.  George is the son of Linsey and Margaret Powell.  He married Beersheba Melissa Jones who is buried at the Hustonville Cemetery.

Margaret Ann Powell –  b. abt 1841 Lincoln, KY, d. 17 Apr 1853, Lincoln, KY.  Margaret is the daughter of George Carpenter Powell  and Beersheba Melissa Jones.

M. Lea Harper –  b. 6 Jul 1837, d. 1 Sep 1880 Lincoln, KY.  M. Lea Harper is the husband of Nancy Jane (Nannie) Powell.  Nannie is the daughter of George Carpenter Powell and Beersheba Melissa Jones.  Nannie is buried in the Hustonville Cemetery.

      George G Harper – b. 6 May 1869 Lincoln, KY, d. 19 Sep 1881 Lincoln, KY.  George is the son of M. Lea Harper and Nancy Jane (Nannie) Powell.

W C Powell – William Carroll Powell – b. 19 Aug 1821 prob. Casey, KY, d. 12 Feb 1879 prob. Casey, KY.  William is the son of Linsey and Margaret Powell.  He married Nancy Crutcher Jones.  It is unknown if Nancy is buried here. 

Sophia M Powell –  Sophia Margaret Powell – b. 16 Oct 1852 Casey, KY, d. 16 Nov 1853 Casey, KY.  Sophia is the daughter of William Carroll Powell and Nancy Crutcher Jones.

George E Powell –  George Edmund Powell – b. 24 Jan 1861, Casey, KY, d. 25 May 1861, Casey, KY.  George is the son of William Carroll Powell and Nancy Crutcher Jones.

Jacob Carpenter – b. 18 Nov 1806 Casey, KY, d. 5 May 1869.  Jacob is the son of Jacob Carpenter and Leah Frye .  Jacob married Martha Jane Jones.  Martha is the daughter of Rev. John S Jones and Annie Christian Coleman who both died in Casey, KY.  Martha is buried in the Hustonville Cemetery.

Emily Carpenter –  Emily Dorinda Carpenter – b. 16 Jul 1838 Casey, KY, d. 12 Jun 1853 Casey, KY.  Emily is the daughter of Jacob Carpenter and Martha Jane Jones.

Novazembla Carpenter – Novazembla Custus Carpenter – b. 20 Jan 1850 Casey, KY, d. 18 Jan 1855 Casey, KY.  Novazambla is the son of Jacob Carpenter and Martha Jane Jones.

Fannie Belle Carpenter – b. 1859 Casey, KY, d. 1860 Casey, KY.  Fannie is the daughter of Jacob Carpenter and Martha Jane Jones.  Jacob Carpenter and Martha Jane Jones had another daughter, Isabella, b. Mar 1856, Casey, KY, d. 8 Jul 1856, Casey, KY.  Isabella is likely buried in the Powell Cemetery as well.

Sandy Elrod Jones –  b. 7 Dec 1804, KY, d. 29 May 1878.  Sandy is the son of Rev. John S Jones and Annie Christian Coleman.  He is also the father-in-law to the William Carroll Powell buried in this cemetery who married Nancy Crutcher Jones.  Sandy married Sophia Crutcher who died in Montgomery Co, MO on 20 Jan 1836. 

Joan Hafley – b. 1801, d. 13 Feb 1801.  Joan is the wife of Frederick Hafley.  I haven’t found any connection to Edmund Powell or descendants.  I assume Frederick and Joan were neighbors or friends of the Powells.  The researcher needs to determine the maiden name of Joan to confirm this.
