I would like to correct an error in the Stevenson material I posted on this site a couple of years ago, and also to list my new email address, please. The new address is: sjhc@windstream.net The item to be corrected is concerning James Henry Stevenson, son of George Alexander and Anna Watson Stevenson. Since I posted this item, I've found George's will, and discovered that James H. was not the ancestor of Adlai Stevenson. He was the only child of G & A who never married, and is buried next to them in Buffalo Springs Cemetery. I've also learned that G & A's son, Joseph M. C. Stevenson inherited his parents' house and tanyard. I don't know where this property was located--Walnut Flat or elsewhere in Lincoln County, and can't find any record of it other than the will. And could this Joseph M. C. be the same as Joseph M. who married Ducilla (Drucilla, maybe?) Benton on 12/29/1841? Thanks very much, Sammy Cundiff From: "Sammy H. Cundiff" Date: Thursday, January 29, 2004 1:48 PM Here's the Stevenson material that I have-- STEVENSON FAMILY From Records of George Milton Stevenson (All text inside parentheses by Sammy Hancock Cundiff) George Alexander Stevenson and Anna/Annie Watson were married in Pennsylvania, moved to Virginia, from there to Walnut Flats in Lincoln County, Kentucky, near to Stanford, where they died and were buried in the yard about the Buffalo Springs Church.( I havenıt been able to find their graves listed in the records of that cemetery in the KHS Library) George died May 12, 1832, Annie on August 7, 1834. It is ordered that fifty acres of land in this county on the headwaters of Reynolds Creek, the property of said Stevenson, be and the same is hereby established a town to be called and known by the name of Savannah. It is further ordered that John Wolford, William Lair, Enoch Yantes, John Rippetoe, James Stapp, and Thomas Kearns be trustees to the said town with such powers as are vested by law.² (Reynolds Creek is located in the Montpelier neighborhood of what is now Russell County, then Adair.) ** Robert Caldwell Stevenson emigrated to Russell County in 1833, where he was a schoolteacher and proprietor of Russell Springs Hotel or Inn, as it was known then. Russell had been created from adjoining counties, Adair, Wayne, and Cumberland in 1825. Robert Caldwell bought 1000 acres of land around where the county seat had been selected as a site (see court record above). Later the officials of the county met and found it was not near the middle of the county and selected a site 8 miles east of this place. (The Stevenson ³plantation², as it was called, was located in the western part of Russell County, very near to Montpelier on the Adair County line. It lay on Cabin Creek, across present Hwy 92 from the above-mentioned land. This house and farm stayed in the family until George M. Stevenson sold it about 1906.) Robert taught school as long as he was strong enough. He lived on his plantation, had a house built, but did not live so very long after it was built. He died and was buried in the family burial grounds about 1/2 mile SW of Mt. Pleasant Church, now the Willis Grider farm. (W. Grider owned the land when PaPa gathered this material in the 1920s or 30s. Donıt know present owner, but directions are: From Montpelier east on Hwy 92, turn right on Liberty Church Road, which is just opposite the church. The small cemetery is in a field on the left hand side of this road. I have been there with Mother.) His wife, Mary, his son Samuel Henry and Samuelıs two wives are also buried there. From research by Alfred Boynton Stevenson in the courthouses of Adair and Green Counties, KY: (He was a grandson of Samuel Henry and Sarah Elizabeth Murrell Stevenson and lived at 3808 Club Drive, Chevy Chase, Maryland 20815) The parents of Sally Naylor who married David Conover 9 Sept 1837 Adair County, and of Mary Lavinia Naylor who married Anderson Murrell 9 Feb 1843 Adair Co were James Naylor, who died 1833/1834, and Sarah Selby, daughter of James Selby, who were married in Green Co 5 Feb 1798. In the settlement of James Naylorıs estate recorded in Adair County 7 Feb 1853, there were 8 other children besides Sally and Mary Lavinia who were identified as follows: Mary m Squire Powell 1/24/1821 Rachel m Elias Powell 1/8/1828 (both of whom lived in Williamson Co TENN) Lydia m Brice Martin Elizabeth m James T. Calhoun Nancy m Andrew Jackson Conover James m Margaret Ann ___ Alexander m Mary Ellen Enson Jsshua, who was administrator. Donald Campbell, Abbot of Coupar Angus, was Lord of Privy Seal to Mary Queen of Scots. He died in about 1562. He was a direct descendant (through various maternal and paternal ancestors ) of Saint Pepin I (ca 580-640) and his great-great-great grandson Charlemagne of Rurik (died 879) and his great grandson Saint Vladimir I, Prince of all Russia; of Robert the Strong and his great grandson Hugh Capet, King of France; of Robert de Bruce (died about 1094) and his great-great-great-great-great grandson Robert I the Bruce, King of Scotland; of Ealhmund (flourished 784-786) and his great grandson Alfred the Great (848/9-899); of Angus II (of the House of Caledonia, ruling 821-833) and his great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson Duncan I, King of Scotland murdered by MacBeth; of Alwyn, 1st Earl of Lennox (1st creation); of Flaald and his great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson Robert II Stuart, King of Scotland; of Arnulf, Bishop of Metz (582-640/1) In this line are many saints, namely: Saint Pepin I (c 580-640) Mayor of Palace of Austrasia, Saint Itta, his wife, and Saint Begga, their daughter. Saint Olga (d 969) wife of Prince Igor of Kiev and her grandson Saint Vladimir I Saint Margaret (c 1045-1093), granddaughter of Edmund II Ironside and great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of Alfred the Great, and wife of Malcolm III Canmore, King of Scotland. Saint Margaretıs Chapel is on the same hill as Edinburgh Castle, being about the oldest part of the complex. The Church of Bendochy is northwest of Coupar Angus which is northeast of Perth. In it, there is the carved rectangular slab marking the sarcophagus of Nicol Campbell which was originally in the floor of the church, but now has been remounted in the wall. He died at age 70 in 1587. His wife was Katherine Drummond of the Blair Drummonds. Their daughter, Margaret Campbell, married first Andrew Drummond of the Stobhall-Campbell Drummonds, second Alexander Magruder of Clan Gregor, third another Campbell. His son Alexander Magruder (about 1610-1677) was taken prisoner in England during the Civil War there and eventually came to Maryland. His descendants are widely scattered throughout the Western Hemisphere and are in civil, military and church careers. One ill-starred descendant figured in the Watergate affair. When William Magruder Selby, great grandson of the immigrant Alexander Magruder, died, his widow, Martha Wilson Selby, moved at quite a great age from Maryland to Kentucky and filed in the Green County Courthouse a power of attorney to be used back in Maryland to collect anything due her from the estate of a son who had remained and died in Maryland From US Census June 18, 1880, Precinct #1: Stevenson, Sarah E(lizabeth Murrell) 36 yrs, widowed (of Samuel Henry) born KY " Louisiana 13 yrs (dau of Samuel Henry & ³ Mary Jane Conover Stevenson) " George Milton 10 yrs (son of SH and MJ above) " Monty 7 yrs (son of SH & Sarah Eliz) ³ Mary Lavinia (Lula) 6 yrs (dau of same) ³ Robert Emery 1 yr (son of same) ³ Rippetoe, Mary M(cBride Davis Stevenson)76 yrs ³ (She was Sarah Eıs mother-in-law, widow of Robert Caldwell Stevenson and James Rippetoe). His plan was not successful, and the seat was located nearer the center of the county at Jamestown, 8 miles east of his land. He is buried in the family burial grounds about 1/2 mile SW of Mount Pleasant Church, Russell County (HWY 92), as also is his widow who at the time of her death was Mrs. James Rippetoe.
