Moses came to America with his father (c . 1754-1766), when he was about four. He married Elizabeth Johnson who was from Antrim, Ireland, or from New Jersey. Her family is said to be cousins of Richard M. Johnson, Vice President of the United States. There is some evidence that they settled in Virginia, and built a mill along the Slate River (now Buckingham Co, VA), had several children there and then relocated to what is now Lincoln Co, KY. Moses built a log home in 1787, where his family lived until his death. Some relocated nearer to Springfield, KY. Moses Sweeney (seal) Teste: Thomas Davis George Helm John Epperson Kentucky: Lincoln Co Court & etc. At a County Court holden for the County of Lincoln at the Court house in Stanford on Monday the 13th day of JUly 1813, the last will and Testament of Moses Sweeney was exhibited into court and proven by the oaths of John Epperson & Thomas Davis, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on motion of Charles Sweeney and John Thomas, the Executors therein named, who made oath and executed bond in the penalty of one thousand dollars with Peter Carter, Valentine Peyton and Thomas Davis their securities. Ordered a certificate be granted them for obtaining a probate of the said will in due form of law. Teste: Thomas Helm clerk Grave of Moses Sweeney On Monday, Nov. 12, 1934, Wm. E. and Mary A, Sweeney located the grave of Moses Sweeney. Mr. __ Nelson of the Interior Journal had run an article asking it whereabouts and from information given by a Mr. Carpenter, we went to it. Going from Danville, to Liberty, turn east at Milledgeville and drive about 2 1/2 miles to the home of George Hubbard. The old graveyard is just across the road. Only one stone had any inscription; four graves had plain markers. They are of native stone and the letters done as if with an icepick. Moses' inscription, worn at that time was "In Memory of Moses Sweeney who departed this life June 13, 1__3. Aged 79 years." The John Sweeney Bible, since destroyed by fire, gave this information, "Moses Sweeney, father of John Sweeney died June 17, 1813." Moses Sweeney's will in W. B. "G" p 3, is dated 27 day of May 1813 and probated 13th day of July 1813. The inscription on Moses Sweeney's gravestone was illegible by 1951 and on July 5 of that year, William E. and Mary A. Sweeney and Nettie and Elsie, children of Zach. T. Sweeney placed a new marker with a duplicate inscription at the foot of the grave. Mary A. Sweeney (Mrs. Wm E. Sweeney) His wife Elizabeth is buried beside him. Subscribed and sworn to before me the above Mary A. Sweeney (Mrs. Wm .E. Sweeney) this 17 day of Nov. 1952. Margaret S. Foley Notary Public, Fayette Co, KY Notes from WFT CD #5/tree 2807 Moses Sweeney moved from Virginia to Kentucky with his wife, seven sons and six daughters. They had twin babies (Joseph and Mary) before Elizabeth was 16 years old. Joseph lost a leg at the age of 45 and his sister Mary, lost both her legs at the age of 75. Their misfortune made them known in the community as "the twin Sweeney's with but one leg between them." One of the Sweeney's became a Camelite preacher of considerable note. In "Collin's History of Kentucky" and in other papers their are notices of early discoveries of petroleum in that state and it is possible that the first coal-oil found in Kentucky was on Moses Sweeney's land on Green River in Casey County. Notes from Mary A. Sweeney Moses Sweeney (Great-grandfather) was one of the pioneers of Lincoln Co, and was contemporary with Daniel Boone. Soon after his arrival in KY, one of his children was killed by the Indians.
