BLACK, Anna Fish

Died  November 26, 1905

Black - Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Las Vegas, N. M., Mrs. Anna Fish Black, wife of Dr. J. M. Black, breathed her last from a complication of diseases. Mrs. Black was united in marriage some 17 years ago to the man of her choice and that union had been a most happy and lovely one. Mrs. Black was the daughter of Mrs. M. E. [Martha Elizabeth Humber] Fish, of this place, but formerly of Crab Orchard, and she is now bowed down with grief over the loss of a loving and dutiful daughter. This had been the fourth winter that she had gone West for her health and it was thought the trip to New Mexico would be of great benefit to her, but it proved just the reverse and the end came after being at Las Vegas only three weeks, as the long trip had worked a hardship on the weakened constitution of this good and noble woman, whose lofty traits of character and high aims were ever dominant.

When quite a young girl she united with the Presbyterian church but later placed her membership in the Methodist church, and from the hour that she gave to Him the keeping of her soul she has proven a godly woman, doing what she could to bring erring ones into the fold and, it can be truthfully said of her, that her efforts were not all in vain. Since her marriage to Dr. Black, with the exception of a few years, they have made their home in Knoxville, where the doctor has a very lucrative surgery practice. For the broken-hearted husband who was with her at the time of her death, and who has ever cared for and watched over her in the long illness just ended, unbounded sympathy is felt, and may the devoted mother, sisters and brothers be able to realize that their loss is the departed one's eternal gain. A loving wife, daughter and sister has gone. May He who doeth all things for the best, comfort the sorrowing and heart-broken ones in their sad bereavement. The funeral services were conducted by Elds. Joseph Ballou, J. G. Livingston and Rev. P. J. Ross at the grave yesterday at 10:30 A. M., after which the remains were laid to rest in Crab Orchard cemetery in the presence of a large crowd assembled there to pay the last tribute to the one who was loved by all who knew her. May the sod rest gently over her.

JAMES, George W.

April 10, 1823 – June 08, 1888

After more than a year's illness of organic valvular disease of the heart, Mr. George W. James departed this life at his home at Crab Orchard, Friday, at noon, aged 63 years.

Born in Pulaski county, he began life as a laborer at 25 cents a day, but by indomitable energy and fine business tact he soon began to shift for himself and to accumulate money, until at his death his estate is estimated at $50,000 to $75,000. He married Miss Bobbitt, a sister of Hon. Fontaine Fox Bobbitt, and for many years they lived at Crab Orchard, where Mr. James engaged in the mercantile and other businesses.

His wife preceded him to the grave a year or more ago, and it is probable that grief over her death hastened his own demise. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and a most useful man in his community, being ever ready to assist those that he thought were honestly striving to better their condition. Four children survive him and the public joins in lamenting his loss, which is its as well as theirs.

The funeral discourse was preached by Rev. J. N. Bowling at the Baptist church Saturday afternoon, to a large audience of sympathizing friends, who afterwards followed the remains to their last resting place on Cemetery Hill.

[Husband of Elizabeth Bobbitt James]

Buried at Crab Orchard Cemetery  -Section B.

PEPPLES, Mary Frances Scott

June 20, 1837 – August 28, 1896

In Memory Of Mrs. Pepples
Died at her home in Lincoln county, Ky., Aug. 28, 1896, Mrs. Frances Pepples, in the 60th year of her age.
Sister Pepples obeyed the Gospel at a meeting held by J. G. Livingston at Boone's school-house in 1880 and from that time until her death was an earnest Christian. She was the first one to come forward and confess her Savior at that meeting, then seven others followed, she being the prime mover of that flourishing church now known as Goshen. She was the oldest of a family of five children.

Her brother, Solomon Scott, whom she devotedly loved, came from Indiana in answer to a telegram, but did not get there in time to hear her talk. Our sister possessed many traits of character which were truly admirable, among which her kind and amiable temper and disposition and her child-like freedom from malice were most conspicuous. Her great kindness of heart and gentleness of manner bound her to her husband and children with the strongest ties of affection and tenderness, and in her intercourse with society was influenced by that crowning excellence, a Christian charity, which suffers long and is kind, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and which prompted her to apologize for the weakness and errors often manifested in the actions of men, and call to mind their redeeming traits when harshly spoken of by others. Her faith and hope was triumphant, often telling her loving ones she was ready and willing to go. She had been a great sufferer here and longed for rest. Her mission on earth is ended, her work is done. Like the snowflake, she has left a mark but no stain, for her influence for good was unbounded. She was a kind neighbor, an affectionate wife and a devoted mother.
A loving wife's chair is vacant, a mother's tender counsel is heard no more, a Christian's work is ended. May we when called upon to take our departure to the dark, chilly regions of the tomb, go home with the same assurance of an eternal reward as did this pure and goodly woman, and may her husband, brother, sisters, children and grand children be prepared to meet her in that heavenly land where no parting tears are shed.
