She graduated from Stanford High School and at age 16 enrolled in Centre College in Danville, KY, where she served as president of Centre's Women's College during her senior year and graduated valedictorian of the class of 1943. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree, she was offered a scholarship to Indiana University (Bloomington) where she earned a master's degree in American History in 1944. She married Carl Gingles in 1946 and they started their life together in Norfolk, VA, where Carl was stationed as Lieutenant (JG) in the U.S. Navy. When his military duty ended, they moved with their firstborn to Ann Arbor, MI, where Carl joined a dental practice and where they lived for 62 years - until his death in 2008.

While raising four children, Sue was active in the community. She was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon and on Session and was a longstanding member and onetime President of Church Women United in Ann Arbor, a national organization that brings all faith denominations together for global mission and outreach. She was a lifelong advocate for equality in civil rights. In response to rising racial tension in the public schools, Sue joined with the wife of the pastor of the Bethel AME Church to form an interracial Friendship Circle in the early 1960s. This group of women met for more than 50 years to build trust and understanding between black and white members of the community. Sue was a firm believer in the education of women and longstanding member of PEO, an organization that promotes the success of women through scholarship programs. Sue and Carl were deeply affected by the World War II death of her brother, E. Owsley Rochester, "Rock" (d. at sea 1942). They cared about peace among nations and believed that seeds for international understanding could be planted by small, individual efforts. Together they hosted a series of international, graduate students for a semester in their home, wanting to share their American family life. Following her passion for promoting cultural exchange, Sue was instrumental in the concept and construction of the Ecumenical Center and International Residence (ECIR) on the University of Michigan campus, which is a living-learning community for students and visiting scholars from around the world. After raising her children Sue began a successful 17-year career as a Realtor for the Charles Reinhart Company. She loved promoting Ann Arbor and finding homes for people who came and went from this vibrant university town. After retirement, Sue volunteered with Carl in Guatemala, Jamaica and Kenya where he worked as a dentist with Rotary International.

The last four years of her life were spent at the Meadowood Retirement Community in Bloomington IN, near her alma mater and her son Bruce. Always with a mind toward progress, Sue donated her body to medical research at Indiana University and her ashes will later be placed with Carl in the garden of their beloved First Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor. MI. Sue is survived by her four children, Sallie (Rob) Marsico, Cathy (Rick) Hollingsworth, Bruce (Mary Ann) Gingles, Alice (David) Sample; her four grandchildren, Ryan, Scott, Lisa and Stephen Sample; her two brothers, William and Samuel Rochester and numerous nieces and nephews. Sue will be remembered by her children and grandchildren for her abundant goodness and generosity. She was a reader and a storyteller. She loved politics and kept her focus on the big picture. She loved to debate serious issues but always found the humor. She was a lifelong sports fan who never lost faith in the Detroit Tigers. She had a signature smile she wore every day that is etched in the hearts of her family and friends. In lieu of a memorial fund, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, Indiana, or Ann Arbor, Michigan.
