Compiled and contributed by Kathy Hines Date: May 10, 2004 Subject: The Maysville Bulletin Thursday, Jan. 31. 1878 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mason Criminal Court The court met on Monday morning, January 28th. In the absence of judge W. J. Sands, Hon. E. C. Phister was elected by the members of the bar as judge. The following gentlemen compose the grand jury C.A. Marshal, forman G.W. Bennett, L. B. Goggin, Wm. Downing, Benoni Showalter, J. H. Boyntz, A.B. Mayhugh, A.T. Cox, W.H. Wallingford, John G. Bacon, L.S. Luttrell, W.P. Clark, J.H. Rice, W.S. Hicks, J.H. Chamberlain. After being charged in an able manner they were shown to their rooms and commenced their investigations. The first case being tried was that of the commonwealth vs. Thomas Hise, charge with carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He was found guilty, sent to jail for ten days and fined $40. In the case of the commonwealth vs. Edward Mulcaha, the bond was declared forfeited and summons ordered. The case of the commonwealth vs. Henry Burgle, was continued on motion of the defendant. Commonwealth vs. John W. Collins, onmotion was filed away. Commonwealth vs. Alfred Forman - alias and continued. The case of Sam. Taylor, charged with the murder of Dick Green, December 10th, 1876, was called and the trial is now in progress, with the following jury: Thurman Pollock, Robert Terhune, A.D. Dickson, E.O. Pullook, Alex Hanna, Geo. F. Winter, W.S. Calvert, David C. Frazee, J.N. Kirk, Wm. H. Duvall, H. C. Morgan, L.H. Long, Commonwealth vs. Whaley, carrying concealed deadly weapons filed away. The grand jury reported the following indictments: Henry Kohlenbach, grand larceny, two cases. Wm. Yates, grand larceny. The grand jury returned to the court the papers, in the case of the commonwealth vs. Samuel Dudgeon, charge with grand larceny, endorsed "dismissed."
