J. Bertrand Jones, junior member of the firm of Fraser & Jones is well desended from an old Vermont family, of English origin. His great-grandfather, Nathaniel Jones, Sr. fought as an American soldier in the war of the Revolution, going from Massachusetts. After the war he settled in Vermont, married and reared a family of eight children, the eldest of whom was Nathaniel Jones Jr. the grandfather of our subject. He in early life removed from Orange County to Lamoille County, Vt. He had a family of eight children the second of whom Alger, is the father of J.B. Jones. Nathaniel Jones Jr. was a man of rare ability and served for thirteen consecutive years in the Vermont State Legislature. Alger Jones also attained distinction in his State, and served as a member of the legislature for four years. He married Mary M. Bliss, a lady of high family connections, and daughter of Sylvester Bliss. She died in 1860, leaving four children, of whom the subject of this sketch is the eldest. His father is still living, at the age of seventy-three, in Orleans County, Vt.  J.B. Jones was born in Lamoille County, Vt., August 22, 1847.  He there recieved an academic education and began life as a salesman, first in his native State. later in Boston, and in 1870 removed to Golconda, Ill. where he engaged in business about three years. From 1873 to 1878 he was a salesman for a wholesale boot and shoe house, of Evansville, Ind. In 1878 he assisted in organizing and became a member of the firm of Rice & Jones, in an extensive hat manufactory of which he had the entire management. In 1881 he severed his connection with that instition to take a partnership with D. J. Fraser of Paducah.  Mr. Jones was married, in Evansville, Ind., in 1879, to Miss Elise C. Disch, daughter of Col. Victor Disch, a prominent lawyer of that city. They are both members of the Presbyterian Church, and have one child a daughter, Ov Jones.
